The art of Lettering

Welcome to the creative world of Lettering. For six days we will dive into the art of creating beautiful letters. The charm of lettering is that, in its simplicity, you only need a pen and paper. But with the help of several types of products, the possibilities become even greater. Just as water is essential to watercolor, your own creativity is the key to playful lettering.

Day 12

Combine all products

12 December is here and we are entering the last day of our introduction to the world of lettering. Over the past few days, we have been discovering pens that are commonly used in the context of lettering. We hope you will continue to exploring the world of letters. There is endless inspiration to be found both online and everywhere you see letters. Find styles you like and mimic their looks. Practice is the key to mastering the art, and the best part is that you will never be fully trained. The possibilities are endless.

Now it's time to combine all the pens into one design. Think about what you want to write and sketch your outline and create a grid with the pencil. When you are ready, let your pens do the magic. And don't be limited by the products you've been given during the lettering theme. Why not add some watercolour markers to your design to add colour to your text.

Day 11

Calligraphy Tip (width 3 mm)

Today's pen has a special design that is perfect for calligraphy. The tip is flat and wide, allowing you to create both thin and thick lines in one motion. All you have to do is to constantly keep the pen at the same angle as you write, usually between 30 to 45 degrees, and the nib will do the rest of the work.

Faux calligraphy is another method of creating calligraphy-like text, but without using calligraphy pens. You can actually use any pen. Start by writing a word in normal handwriting. Afterwards, you will add thicker sections to each letter to simulate the effect of using a calligraphy pen. With faux calligraphy, you are not limited to what pens you have at home, and you can be even bolder with the letter design.

Practice is the key to success in calligraphy. By experimenting with different angles and pressure, and practising writing different letters and styles, you can soon master the art.

Day 10

Brush pen

Today's pen has a double tip, where one side is a brush pen and the other side is a fineliner. Ever since the phenomenon Lettering became big, the interest for brush pens has completely exploded. The soft tip allows you to change the thickness of the lines depending on how hard you press the pen against the paper. Of course, you can also use the pen for drawing and illustrating, as there is a real advantage to using a pen that is very flexible and can affect the width of the lines in a natural way.

See how the lines change smoothly when you press hard or loose, draw fast or slow. This pen is simply perfect for writing beautiful letters.

Day 9

Fineliner from Artline

You can't have too many fineliners if you ask us. They are incredibly versatile and come in different sizes and colours. You can illustrate or sketch with it, use it as a really thin writing pen, as well as for BuJo or scrapbooking. Fineliners together with watercolours to fill in contours or mark details is a great finish. They also work well with alcohol-based markers, for similar purposes as with watercolours. Just let the colours dry first before applying the fineliner.

In today's door you will find a fineliner from Artline. It is waterproof after it has dried, does not fade, made of water-based pigment ink without Xylene. Yesterday we did a sketch with the 3H pencil, and now it's time to fill in the lines or contours using the new fineliner. If you afterwards erase the graphite, you will see that the fineliner is the only thing left on the paper.

Day 8

3H pencil + sharpner

A pencil is an incredibly handy tool to have in the pen case for those who do lettering. And in today's door, you'll find a pencil with the letters 3H printed on the body, along with a neat pencil sharpener. A 3H pencil is harder than many other pencils, providing a nice, sharp line that is ideal for sketching the foundation for what you want to create. The pencil allows you to create a grid, guide lines or design precise layouts before applying colours to the letters.

The lead inside a pencil can be softer or harder. The hardness is graded on a scale, where 9B is the softest and 9H the hardest. H stands for Hard and B for Black. If you want a dark line you should choose a pen with a softer lead, and if you want a lighter line you should choose a hard lead. It's easier to erase lines created by hard leads, making the 3H a great pen for the layout of your letters.

Day 7

Paper for Lettering

Unlike textured watercolour paper, the surface of paper used for lettering is often smooth. The smooth surface provides greater control and gives clean, sharp lines. If you want to practice a lot, a pro tip is to practice on classic copy paper or opened envelopes that you would throw away anyway. It's cheaper, which means you don't have to hold back on how much you can practice. When you want to level up, it's worth buying a higher quality paper that allows you to explore with different types of pens and colors.

In today's door you will find an A6 pad with 120g paper. The paper is plain so you can freely create letters in all possible sizes and shapes. It is also common to use paper with dotted pages or preprinted lines. It can be nice when you get guidelines to refer to.

December 7-12 we will explore lettering using different products and techniques. Use this pad to practice, again and again.
